Body Mass Index Calculation

The high BMI Body Mass Index calculation is a method that is used in order to evaluate someone’s body fat comparing the ratio of their weight to their height squared. To determine one’s BMI, multiply your weight in pounds by 703. Then divide that number by one’s inches in height and then divide that result by your inches in height again. The metric system can also be used where the weight in kilograms is divided in height by meters squared.

One’s BMI will fall into one of several categories:

  • Less than 18.5 is underweight
  • 18.6-24.9 is normal weight
  • 25-29.9 is overweight
  • 30-34.9 is class I obesity
  • 35-39.9 is class 2 obesity
  • Over 40 is class 3 obesity

Patients with a BMI of over 25 are connected to an increased risk of comorbidities (obesity-related medical conditions) such as heart disease, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea and Type II Diabetes. With a BMI of over 40, there is a dramatic rise in the incidence of much obesity-related comorbidities. Because of this, weight loss surgery can provide a lifeline to many patients who have been unsuccessful at losing weight on their own and whose life is at risk without weight loss.

BMIs & Weight Loss Surgery

Majority of the time, a BMI of 40 or more is required for a patient to have bariatric surgery, although some procedures to lose weight may recommend a BMI as low as 30. One type of Tijuana weight loss surgery such as LAP-BAND may be suitable for someone with a BMI of 30 and not for 55. A hernia, pneumonia and poor wound healing are all associated with higher BMI. For this particular reason, some gastric bypass surgeons choose not to operate on many patients with a high BMI. The maximum BMI recommended as safe for our Tijuana weight loss surgery will depend on that patient’s medical history, where their fatty tissue is located and the policy of the particular surgeon and/or facility.

At our Tijuana weight loss surgery center, we believe in helping all that we can. Weight loss patients with a high BMI for bariatric surgery, may feel discouraged and caught in a dangerous loop. However, many procedures may be achieved even on high BMI patients and we are here to discuss those options with you.
