What is Revision Surgery?
In many cases, patients who have surgery for obesity treatment obtain great weight loss results. However, some individuals, whether obese or morbidly obese, have less than satisfying results after their procedure. Some even regain weight or have medical complications after surgery too.
Bariatric surgery revision is an ideal treatment option for those who may or may not had great results after surgery. Our team can evaluate your specific medical needs and discuss your specific requirements. From there, we can devise a plan for weight loss that will work better for you.
As with any weight loss treatment, we will educate you on what to expect before, during and after your treatment as well as all of the risks and benefits associated with the procedure chosen.
We can answer any questions you may have about the procedure too. This helps our patients to make the most informed decision on their path to achieving their weight loss goals.
Types of Revision Surgeries
- Lap-Band Surgery to Gastric Sleeve Surgery
- Gastric Band to RNY Gastric Bypass

LAP-BAND Revision
Many patients who’ve undergone gastric banding (lap-band) surgery are increasingly undergoing revision surgeries because of gastric banding’s poor results compared with newer weight loss surgeries. Patients who’ve undergone lap-band often have inadequate weight loss because of band slippage, poor patient dietary habits, or sometime else.
Sometimes, the band will slip, which results in the need for surgery to either reposition or replace the device entirely. Slippage is determined when a patient realizes they are failing to lose weight after their bariatric surgery or when they begin to regain the weight they have lost prior. Infection can also occur if the band erodes in the stomach. When this erosion takes place, a hole is made within the stomach lining that is exposed.
In order to correct this surgical complication, another surgery procedure such as gastric bypass or gastric sleeve is required in order to mend the hole. Both procedures can be performed if someone fails to see the results they expected when first having a LAP-BAND bariatric surgical procedure. Our bariatric surgeons often recommend revising to gastric sleeve surgery after lap-band surgery. Both use the primary technique of restrictive, yet gastric sleeve is better tolerated by patients.
Gastric Sleeve Revision
While gastric sleeve surgery is considered one of the most effective weight loss treatment forms, it may require revision if the stomach stretches.
The stomach can come to an hourglass shape that may need to be re-sleeved in order to prevent weight gain in the future. Some patients may not see the results they thought they would and would benefit from another procedure.
Gastric Bypass Revision
Gastric bypass is the most common weight loss surgery today, but still, the surgery is very powerful and requires a strict lifestyle commitment. Many patients who’ve achieved their ideal weight can revise to another surgery to help maintain their current weight.
Many patients who fail to produce adequate and lasting weight loss with vertical sleeve gastrectomy are advised to convert to duodenal switch. Duodenal switch produces higher expected weight loss than gastric sleeve yet requires more patient diligence.
Stretching of the stomach may require trimming or reshaping in some patients. The smaller, upper portion of the stomach must be restored to the original anatomy. Are-sized and smaller pouch will help someone lose weight again.
Who Needs Bariatric Surgery Revision?
There could be a number of reasons as to why you would want to undergo a new surgery. A lot of the time, patients will find that the band has slipped or needs to be replaced. This is where revision is necessary. It is also important to remove the old band.
Some people may not fit well with the revision either. This can occur because perhaps one’s metabolism just does not agree with it or perhaps they simply cannot cope with the lifestyle change. Whatever the problem happens to be, it is sometimes best to have revision surgery.
Post-Op Care
Your diet should be carefully watched if you undergo revision surgery. If you have gotten the band replaced then you will need to be careful with what you eat. It is also a good idea to listen to your doctor and take any advice that he or she gives you.
This includes following the medications that you are given. A post-op diet and vitamin schedule will be supplied. Be sure to follow all details closely in order to prevent any sickness from occurring.
Revision Surgery Complications
It is important for patients to remember that revision surgery is going to create a higher level of risk for those who want to correct their previous operations. Gastric banding, in particular, can end up requiring a lot of revision surgery. This is also due to the fact that there are a lot of newer surgeries out there that people are trying out and some of them provide much better results.
When it comes to complications, issues like leakage and infection can result. All patients will, therefore, need to be aware of the risk that they are taking. It’s important to attend all post-op appointments so that one’s doctor can properly examine you for potential complications that may arise both immediately after surgery and over time.
Side Effects of Revision Surgery
Leakage is probably one of the most common side effects when it comes to revision surgery, although depending on the skill level of your surgeon this may not always be an issue. A lot of the time, side-effects will include the improvement of your current gastric band.
It is, of course, important to take a look at the need for re-operation. This is something that can end up arising over time especially if you decide to endure a revision surgery. When it comes to the likes of bariatric surgery revisions, it is always important to be aware of the problems that you may end up facing.
